What is abrasive blasting or sandblasting?
Sandblasting is the process of smoothing, shaping and cleaning a hard surface by forcing solid particles across that surface at high speeds; the effect is similar to that of using sandpaper, but is significantly faster and provides a more even finish with no problems at corners or crannies.
How does sandblasting work?
Sandblasting is performed with high pressure compressed air and abrasive particles such as garnet – there are no liquids used, therefore there is virtually no residue left behind on the surface. The client may wish to smooth a rough surface, roughen a smooth surface, shape a surface or remove surface contaminants by stripping everything away except the original metal.
Sand blasting is effective at:
- instantly removing an old layer of paint
- removing oxidation or corrosion
- speeding up the process of sanding objects
- reaching small places and crevices
- saving on manual labour
